Services FAQ

What is Acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a vast and complex healing system, and many people have questions about how it works. Below are some of the most common questions we receive. If you’d like to learn more, feel free to call or email—Dr. Jaz is happy to chat!

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a holistic medicine that originated in China over 3,500 years ago. It uses fine needles to stimulate the body's qi (energy or life force), promoting balance and healing. Today’s acupuncture combines ancient wisdom with modern techniques, often incorporating gua sha, cupping, moxibustion, and Chinese herbal prescriptions for a comprehensive approach to wellness.

What can Acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture can address a wide range of conditions—many of the same things you’d see a medical doctor for. Below are just a few examples:

  • Pain & Injury: Headaches, migraines, arthritis, fibromyalgia, disc issues, sprains, strains, tendonitis

  • Digestive Health: IBS, colitis, constipation, diarrhea

  • Mental & Emotional Health: Anxiety, depression, OCD, insomnia

  • Women’s Health: PMS, menopause symptoms

  • Respiratory & Immune Support: Sinus infections, common colds

  • Chronic Conditions: High blood pressure, post-stroke paralysis, trigeminal neuralgia, Meniere’s disease

How should I prepare for my appointment?

  • Eat something within a few hours of your session.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

  • Avoid wearing heavy scents.

  • For your first visit, arrive 20 minutes early to complete paperwork, or fill it out in advance [HERE].

What to Expect During an Acupuncture Session?

If you’re considering acupuncture for pain relief, stress reduction, or overall wellness, you may be wondering what to expect. Here’s a brief overview of a typical session:

1. Initial Consultation

Your session begins with a detailed consultation where the acupuncturist gathers information about your health history, symptoms, and lifestyle. This helps create a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your health goals.

2. Physical Examination

The acupuncturist may examine your pulse and tongue, which are key diagnostic tools in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Additionally, they may palpate acupuncture points or assess areas of discomfort to refine the treatment approach.

3. Needle Insertion

Ultra-thin, sterile needles are placed at specific acupoints on the body. While some people feel a brief sensation upon insertion, acupuncture is generally painless. You may experience sensations like warmth, heaviness, or tingling as the treatment begins to take effect.

4. Relaxation Period

Once the needles are in place, you’ll rest for 15 to 30 minutes while they work to rebalance your body. Many people find this period deeply relaxing—an ideal time for meditation, deep breathing, or simply unwinding.

5. Needle Removal

After the designated time, the practitioner will gently remove the needles. Some people feel energized and refreshed, while others experience a deep sense of relaxation following treatment.

6. Aftercare

Post-treatment recommendations may include lifestyle adjustments, dietary guidance, or self-care tips to maximize the benefits of your session. Acupuncture works cumulatively, so multiple sessions may be recommended for optimal results.

What are some of the techniques used in TCM?

  • Moxibustion: A warming technique using the herb Ai Ye to stimulate acupuncture points and support healing.

  • Cupping: Suction therapy that increases circulation and relieves pain in the back, neck, and shoulders.

  • Electroacupuncture: Small electrical currents applied to acupuncture needles to enhance pain relief and reduce inflammation.

  • Gua Sha: A gentle scraping technique that improves circulation and supports the body's natural healing process.

Do you prescribe Chinese herbs?

Yes! Herbal medicine is a key part of TCM. While we often start with acupuncture and related therapies, herbs can be a great addition—especially if you prefer a needle-free approach.

How is Chinese herbal medicine different from Western herbs?

Unlike Western herbalism, which often uses single herbs, Chinese herbal medicine relies on carefully formulated blends to address specific patterns of imbalance. Herbs come in different forms (raw, granular, or pills), but we prefer granular and pill formats for ease of use.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin—about the width of a human hair. Some people feel nothing at all, while others experience a mild tingling, warmth, or heaviness. Most find it deeply relaxing, and many even fall asleep during treatment.

I’m afraid of needles—what are my options?

Needle phobia is common, and we completely understand! Acupuncture needles are nothing like the thick, hollow hypodermic needles used in medical settings. However, if you’re still unsure, we can use acupressure, moxibustion, cupping, or electrostimulation as alternative therapies. We always work within your comfort zone. You may also book specifically: "Needle-Free Acupuncture" session.

Can Acupuncture help me quit smoking or other addictions?

Yes! Acupuncture helps eliminate nicotine and other substances from the body, reducing cravings and addressing the emotional side of addiction. While it’s not a magic fix, combining acupuncture with a structured plan and support system greatly improves success rates. Sessions are recommended several times a week for the best results.

Can Acupuncture help with weight loss?

Yes! Acupuncture supports weight loss by:
✔ Reducing cravings and food addiction
✔ Regulating digestion for better metabolism
✔ Addressing emotional eating patterns
✔ Supporting a balanced, healthy lifestyle

For best results, acupuncture should be paired with a nutritious diet and regular movement—and herbal prescriptions can also be helpful.
